Size & Dimensions

• Minimum Size: ADA signs should be large enough to be legible. Typically, the minimum height for tactile characters (raised text) is 5/8 inch, and the maximum height is 2 inches.
• Sign Background: The background should be a non-glare material, such as matte or semi-gloss finishes, for ease of reading.
• Mounting Height: The center of the sign should be between 48 inches and 60 inches from the floor.

Tactile Characters

• Raised Text: All text on ADA signs must be raised at least 1/32 inch above the sign’s surface.
• Font Style: The font used should be simple, sans-serif, and easy to read, such as Helvetica, Arial, or similar.

• Size & Type: Braille characters should be 1/10 inch high, raised to a height of at least 1/32 inch.
• Dot Configuration: Braille must follow the standard 6-dot system, with the correct spacing and alignment.

Color Contrast

• Color of Text & Background: The text and background should have high contrast for visibility. Typically, dark text on a light background or light text on a dark background is preferred.
• Reflective or Non-Reflective: For visibility, signs can be reflective or non-reflective depending on their use (e.g., in low-light areas, reflective materials might be used).

Material

• Durability: ADA signs should be made from durable materials like plastic, aluminum, acrylic, or other weather-resistant materials for longevity.
• Surface Texture: The surface should not be overly shiny or glossy to avoid glare. A matte or satin finish is recommended.
• Edge Design: The edges should be smooth and rounded to avoid sharp corners or edges.

Compliance with ADA Standards

• Code Compliance: ADA signage must comply with the guidelines set forth by the ADA Standards for Accessible Design and other relevant state or local codes.
• Non-Glare Surface: Signs must have non-glare surfaces to ensure easy reading under varying lighting conditions.

Informational & Warning Signs

• Text for Instructions and Warnings: Signs may include instructions for actions (e.g., "Push to Open") or warnings (e.g., "In Case of Fire, Use Stairs"). These must have both tactile text and Braille for accessibility.
• Size and Placement: Ensure that informational and warning signs are positioned at an accessible height and location.
