DTF Print Care Guide: Keep Your Custom Apparel Looking Its Best
Stefan WylieShare
At Cutting Edge Signs & Graphics, we take pride in producing high-quality Direct-to-Film (DTF) printed apparel that looks vibrant, professional, and built to last. While DTF prints are known for their durability, proper garment care is essential to maximize the lifespan of your custom designs.
Follow these simple care instructions to keep your shirts, hoodies, and other apparel looking great wash after wash.
Washing Instructions
Turn Garments Inside Out
Before washing, always turn your garment inside out. This helps protect the printed design from rubbing against other clothing and the washing machine drum, reducing friction that can lead to cracking, peeling, or premature wear.
Wash in Cold Water
Use cold water only, keeping temperatures below 86°F (30°C). Excessive heat can weaken the adhesive used in DTF printing, causing the design to lift or peel over time.
Use a Gentle Cycle
Select the delicate or gentle wash setting whenever possible. A gentler cycle minimizes stress on both the garment and the printed design.
Choose Mild Detergent
Use a mild laundry detergent and avoid harsh chemicals. Do not use:
- Bleach
- OxiClean or similar oxygen-based cleaners
- Whitening agents
- Fabric softeners
These products can damage the print and shorten its lifespan.
Avoid Dry Cleaning
Never dry clean DTF-printed garments. The solvents used during the dry-cleaning process can break down DTF inks and adhesives, permanently damaging the design.
Drying Instructions
Air Dry for Best Results
The safest and most effective way to preserve your DTF print is to hang dry the garment. Air drying eliminates heat exposure and helps maintain the integrity of the design.
Tumble Dry on Low Heat
If machine drying is necessary, use the lowest heat setting and the lowest tumble setting available. High heat can cause the adhesive to soften and may lead to cracking or peeling.
Ironing Instructions
Never Iron Directly on the Print
Do not place an iron directly on the DTF design. The heat can melt or permanently damage the print.
If ironing is needed, turn the garment inside out or place a protective cloth between the iron and the garment. Always use a low heat setting.
Enjoy Long-Lasting Custom Apparel
With proper care, your DTF-printed apparel can maintain its vibrant colors, soft feel, and professional appearance for years to come. Following these simple washing, drying, and ironing guidelines will help protect your investment and keep your custom garments looking their best.
