DTF Transfer Care Instructions: How to Wash & Dry DTF Shirts

DTF transfers can produce vibrant, detailed custom apparel, but how you wash and dry the garment can make a noticeable difference in how the print looks over time.

If you want the simple version, follow these DTF care instructions:

  • Turn the garment inside out before washing.
  • Machine wash in cold water with a mild detergent.
  • Avoid bleach and harsh cleaning chemicals.
  • Tumble dry on low heat or air dry when practical.
  • Do not iron directly over the DTF print.
  • Avoid dry cleaning unless the transfer manufacturer specifically permits it.

Those few habits can help reduce unnecessary heat, abrasion and chemical exposure to the printed area.

Below, we'll explain how to wash DTF shirts, how to dry them, what temperatures to use, what to avoid and what to do if a transfer starts lifting.

What Is DTF Printing?

DTF stands for Direct-to-Film.

The artwork is printed onto a transfer film, combined with a heat-activated adhesive system, and then applied to compatible apparel using heat and pressure.

DTF works especially well for:

  • Full-color logos
  • Gradients
  • Detailed artwork
  • Photographic designs
  • Small lettering
  • Names and numbers
  • Short and medium apparel runs
  • Personalized garments

At Cutting Edge Signs & Graphics, we use DTF alongside screen printing and embroidery so the decoration method can be matched to the artwork, garment and quantity.

How to Wash DTF Shirts

Washing a DTF-decorated shirt is straightforward, but a few simple habits can help reduce unnecessary wear on the transfer.

1. Turn the Shirt Inside Out

Before placing a DTF shirt in the washing machine, turn it inside out.

This reduces direct rubbing between the printed surface and:

  • The washing-machine drum
  • Zippers
  • Buttons
  • Rough fabrics
  • Other printed garments

Friction is a normal part of laundering, so protecting the printed face is one of the easiest ways to care for decorated apparel.

2. Wash DTF Shirts in Cold Water

For everyday care, we recommend washing DTF-decorated apparel in cold water.

Cold water reduces unnecessary heat exposure while still working well with modern laundry detergents for normal washing.

Some transfer systems permit warmer wash temperatures, but cold water is an easy conservative recommendation when you're trying to maximize the life of custom apparel.

3. Use a Mild Laundry Detergent

Use a normal mild laundry detergent and avoid aggressive cleaning chemicals unless specifically permitted by the garment and decoration manufacturer.

In particular, we recommend avoiding chlorine bleach on DTF-decorated garments.

Bleach can affect both the garment fabric and decorated areas, especially over repeated wash cycles.

4. Use an Appropriate Wash Cycle

You generally do not need a special washing machine just because a shirt has a DTF transfer.

A normal household wash cycle is appropriate for many garments. If the shirt itself calls for delicate care, follow the garment manufacturer's instructions.

When in doubt, a gentler cycle reduces mechanical abrasion.

5. Wash Similar Items Together

Try to avoid washing a DTF shirt with particularly abrasive items such as garments containing large metal hardware, exposed zippers or other components that could repeatedly rub against the printed surface.

Turning the garment inside out helps, but sensible load separation can help too.

Should You Wait Before Washing a New DTF Shirt?

If you just received freshly decorated apparel, don't rush it straight into the washing machine.

Transfer systems and garment combinations can have different post-application recommendations. If your decorator provides a specific first-wash waiting period, follow those instructions.

As a conservative practice, allowing approximately 24 hours before the first wash gives the freshly applied decoration time before it goes through its first full laundry cycle.

Can You Put DTF Shirts in the Dryer?

Yes, many properly applied DTF transfers can go through a household dryer.

However, if you're trying to maximize the appearance of the decoration over time, lower heat is preferable to repeatedly exposing the print to high dryer temperatures.

Tumble Dry on Low Heat

When using a dryer, we recommend:

  • Keeping the shirt inside out
  • Using low heat
  • Removing garments after the cycle rather than repeatedly overdrying them

Repeated excessive heat is unnecessary and can accelerate normal wear on both decorated apparel and the garment itself.

Can You Air Dry a DTF Shirt?

Yes.

Air drying is a perfectly good option for DTF-decorated apparel when practical because it eliminates dryer heat altogether.

If you prefer using the dryer, you do not necessarily need to abandon it—just use a sensible low-heat setting.

Can You Iron a DTF Print?

Do not place a hot iron directly on top of a DTF transfer.

The decorated surface is heat sensitive, and direct contact with a household iron can damage the finish or distort the transfer.

If the garment itself needs ironing:

  1. Turn the garment inside out.
  2. Avoid placing direct concentrated heat behind the decorated area whenever possible.
  3. Use an appropriate temperature for the garment fabric.
  4. Follow the garment care label.

Never assume that because a DTF transfer was originally applied with a heat press it is safe to iron directly. A professional heat-press application uses controlled temperature, pressure and time.

Can DTF Shirts Be Dry Cleaned?

In general, we recommend avoiding dry cleaning for standard DTF-decorated apparel unless the specific transfer system and garment have been approved for it.

Dry-cleaning processes use solvents and conditions that differ significantly from normal household washing.

For most custom DTF t-shirts, hoodies and casual apparel, normal machine washing is the better care method.

Should You Use Fabric Softener on DTF Shirts?

For the simplest care routine, we recommend using a mild detergent and keeping additional laundry chemicals to a minimum.

Some transfer products have more restrictive care requirements than others, so if preserving the decoration is the priority, avoiding heavy use of fabric softeners and specialty additives is a reasonable approach.

The garment's own care label should also be followed.

Can You Use OxiClean on DTF Shirts?

There is no universal answer for every DTF ink, adhesive, garment and oxygen-based cleaning product.

Rather than treating all oxygen cleaners as automatically safe or automatically damaging, our recommendation is simple:

For routine care, use a mild standard detergent and avoid strong stain treatments directly on the printed area.

If a stain requires more aggressive treatment, test the product in an inconspicuous area and follow the garment and cleaner manufacturer's instructions.

How Long Do DTF Prints Last?

There is no responsible single number of washes that applies to every DTF garment.

Longevity depends on several factors, including:

  • The transfer system
  • Ink and adhesive quality
  • Heat-press application
  • Garment fabric
  • Artwork coverage
  • Wash temperature
  • Dryer temperature
  • Detergent
  • Frequency of washing
  • Normal wear and abrasion

A professionally produced transfer that is properly applied and reasonably cared for can hold up very well through repeated normal wear and laundering.

Proper care won't make any garment permanent, but it can help reduce premature cracking, lifting and unnecessary surface wear.

Why Is My DTF Transfer Cracking?

Cracking can have several possible causes.

These can include:

  • Repeated high-heat drying
  • Heavy abrasion
  • Stretching the garment beyond what the design can accommodate
  • An unusually large solid print area
  • Improper initial application
  • Incompatible garment material
  • Normal wear over time

Large, solid graphics naturally behave differently than designs containing more open space because there is more transferred material moving with the fabric.

Why Is My DTF Print Peeling or Lifting?

A DTF print that begins lifting shortly after production may indicate something different from normal long-term wear.

Possible causes can include:

  • Insufficient heat during application
  • Incorrect pressure
  • Improper press time
  • Moisture in the garment
  • Fabric coatings or treatments
  • An incompatible garment
  • Incorrect transfer application

If apparel produced by Cutting Edge Signs & Graphics begins lifting unusually soon under normal use, contact us rather than attempting to repair it immediately. We can review the garment and help determine what happened.

Can You Repress a DTF Transfer That Is Peeling?

Sometimes a transfer edge can potentially be repressed, but we don't recommend experimenting with a household iron if you aren't familiar with the transfer system.

Too much heat, too little heat or uneven pressure can make the problem worse.

If we produced the garment, contact us first.

For other garments, a professional apparel decorator may be able to evaluate whether repressing is appropriate.

Can DTF Be Used on Cotton?

Yes. DTF is commonly used on compatible cotton garments.

It is especially useful for detailed, full-color artwork where traditional one- or two-color decoration methods may not provide the desired appearance.

For a ready-to-customize option, see our custom District DM130 men's tri-blend shirt, which is available with full-color DTF decoration.

Can DTF Be Used on Polyester?

DTF can be used on many compatible polyester garments, but polyester deserves additional production consideration.

Certain dyed polyester fabrics can experience dye migration, where garment dye moves into or affects a heat-applied decoration. Heat-sensitive performance fabrics may also require lower application temperatures or a specialized transfer system.

This is one reason garment selection matters.

If you're ordering performance shirts, uniforms, safety apparel or another specialty garment, let us know how the apparel will be used so we can evaluate the appropriate decoration method.

DTF vs Screen Printing: Is the Care Different?

There is significant overlap in good apparel-care habits.

Turning garments inside out, avoiding unnecessary high heat and following the garment care label are sensible practices for many decorated shirts regardless of printing method.

The difference is in the decoration itself.

DTF is a heat-applied transfer, while screen printing deposits ink through a screen directly onto the garment.

That affects the feel, production process and suitability for different artwork and quantities.

DTF vs Embroidery: Which Lasts Longer?

DTF and embroidery are fundamentally different decoration methods, so choosing between them should not be based on care requirements alone.

Embroidery uses thread stitched directly into the garment and is particularly well suited to:

  • Hats
  • Polos
  • Jackets
  • Workwear
  • Corporate logos

DTF is especially useful for:

  • Full-color graphics
  • Gradients
  • Detailed artwork
  • T-shirts
  • Personalization
  • Smaller flexible order quantities

DTF Care Mistakes to Avoid

If you want a simple list to remember, avoid these common mistakes:

  • Washing every load on unnecessarily high heat
  • Using chlorine bleach on the decorated garment
  • Ironing directly over the transfer
  • Repeatedly drying on the hottest setting
  • Washing the print face-out with abrasive garments
  • Using aggressive stain chemicals directly on the graphic
  • Dry cleaning without confirming compatibility

Best Way to Wash a DTF Shirt

If you remember nothing else from this guide, use this routine:

  1. Turn the shirt inside out.
  2. Wash in cold water.
  3. Use mild detergent.
  4. Avoid bleach.
  5. Tumble dry low or air dry.
  6. Never iron directly on the design.

That is a simple care routine that works well for the type of custom DTF apparel we produce.

Frequently Asked Questions About DTF Care

Yes. Properly produced DTF apparel can be machine washed. We recommend turning the garment inside out, using cold water and washing with a mild detergent.

What temperature should I wash DTF shirts?

For the custom DTF apparel we produce, cold water is our preferred everyday recommendation because it minimizes unnecessary heat exposure.

Can DTF prints go in the dryer?

Yes, many DTF-decorated garments can be machine dried. We recommend using a low-heat setting if you want to minimize heat exposure to the transfer.

Is it better to air dry DTF shirts?

Air drying eliminates dryer heat and is a good option when practical. It isn't mandatory for every DTF garment, but it is a conservative way to care for decorated apparel.

Can I iron over a DTF design?

No. Do not place a household iron directly on the DTF transfer. If the garment needs ironing, turn it inside out and avoid concentrated heat directly against the decorated area.

Can I use bleach on DTF shirts?

We recommend avoiding chlorine bleach on DTF-decorated apparel. Use a mild detergent for normal washing.

Can DTF prints peel?

Any decorated apparel can experience wear over time, but early or unusual peeling can also be related to application, garment compatibility or excessive heat. If a garment we produced develops a problem unusually soon, contact us so we can review it.

Can I wash DTF shirts with other clothes?

Yes. Turn the garment inside out and avoid loads containing items that may heavily abrade the decorated surface.

Does fabric type change DTF care?

It can. Always follow the garment manufacturer's care label in addition to decoration-care recommendations. Specialty polyester, performance wear and heat-sensitive fabrics may have different requirements than standard cotton shirts.
